The seventeen-storey tower block on SPIEGEL Island is an icon of the 1960s. Originally built for IBM, the building was designed by Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen. The design of the façade refers to the pattern of a Hollerith punch card, an early storage medium for data processing – a technology-related reference that is particularly visible in the dark thanks to the selective lighting of individual windows.
The aim of the revitalisation by architects Kunst + Herbert was to transfer the spirit of the original design into a modern working environment with contemporary building technology. In addition to restructuring and redesigning the interior, the listed façade was renovated in compliance with current fire protection and energy standards – without losing the architectural clarity of the building.
bicon Generalplanung was responsible for service phase 8 as part of the project supervision. The project was completed in 2018.
