The Veterinary Center for Resistance Research (TZR) was commissioned by the State of Berlin and funded by the federal government. The new building is located on the veterinary medicine campus of Freie Universität Berlin, in a green district on the city’s outskirts.
The three-story building includes animal housing areas, laboratory spaces, and offices, with around 50% of the total area dedicated to building services. The working areas are equipped as S2 biosafety-level laboratories, while the public zones are bright and welcoming. An open foyer with a cascading staircase connects the different areas of the building.
After the construction process stalled in 2020, WBRE, together with Kondius AG, was commissioned by the State of Berlin to continue the project. By reassigning the planning and site supervision of the technical fit-out, the construction schedule was efficiently resumed, ensuring completion by mid-2022.
Following the building’s opening in 2023, it was determined that adjustments to the surface coatings in the animal housing areas were necessary to better meet practical requirements. This optimization led to a roughly one-year extension before the final commissioning of the research center.
