The new Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering (LASE) building on the southern edge of the campus of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern is a modern research building for bundling interdisciplinary research activities. The aim was to bring together various scientific disciplines in one building and thus promote dialogue and collaboration.
The size and design of the building blended in well with the existing buildings on the campus. Due to its location on the slope, it appeared to be of different heights depending on the viewing direction: towards the higher Gottlieb-Daimler-Straße, it looked like a one to two-storey building, while on the opposite side it was two to three storeys high. The new building thus harmonised with its surroundings and at the same time provided a striking prelude to the southern extension of the campus.
The self-contained laboratory units were surrounded by open communication areas, offices and common areas, which specifically supported informal dialogue between the research groups.
For this project, bicon was commissioned with the construction management and site supervision in accordance with service phase 8 (HOAI). The service included comprehensive supervision of the construction work, coordination of the contractors and ensuring that the planning objectives were realised on time and to the required quality.
