In the immediate vicinity of HafenCity and with a view of the Port of Hamburg, an innovative neighbourhood project is being developed on the site of the former Gruner + Jahr publishing building.
The striking architecture is being extensively renovated and transformed into a modern office and retail centre that combines sustainable urban development with urban vibrancy.
A particular focus is on sustainability: the plans meet the highest environmental and social standards in order to achieve DGNB certification in gold or platinum. This ensures that the neighbourhood is not only designed in an ecologically responsible way, but also meets social and economic requirements. An innovative mobility concept, certified by the Good Mobility Council, supports the sustainable development of the area.
The neighbourhood on Baumwall is based on a variety of uses:
• The south building will have a market hall modelled on New York’s famous Chelsea Market.
• A new town square with retail space and event rooms will revitalise the area.
• A sustainable office building and 120 residential units will be built on the former Gruner + Jahr car park – planned by the renowned architectural firm Snøhetta.
• Existing buildings will be converted from single to multi-tenant use and will have direct access to the market hall, creating a lively urban district that preserves the historic building fabric while creating future-oriented living and working spaces.
The result is a lively neighbourhood that preserves the historic building fabric while creating future-oriented living and working spaces.
